Reasons to travel to Sofia

1. Access

Situated at just 10 km from the center of the city, Sofia Airport welcomed in 2021 around 3,5 million passengers arriving by 34 international carriers. A lot of them offer excellent promotional rates for flight to all major cities in Europe. Taxis, car rentals and a bus passing every 15 to 20 min are always there to help you get from the airport to the center of the city in no more than 30 min. But the fastest and easiest way is by entering the modern metro station at Terminal 2.

2. Hospitality

Sofia is a small city situated at only 492 sq. m. But offers more than 400 hotels ready to accommodate you, offering unique combination of excellent location and a whole range of services. Take a walk in the center of the city along Tzar Osvoboditel boulevard, the pedestrian Vitosha boulevard, or take a turn in a random intersection and you will find a diversity of restaurants, offering exquisite traditional Bulgarian or international cuisine.

3. Nature

Sofia is praised by its visitors for being one of the greenest capitals of Europe. The center of the city accommodates the large park Boris Garden, not too far are the park at the National Palace of Culture with its park with remarkable fountains and the South Park. If you take a walk towards the National Theater, you will discover the aristocratic beauty of the City Garden and the gardens of the former tzar's palace. If you have time, make a trip to Vitosha mountain with its lovely hiking tracks and winter ski slopes. 

4. History and sightseeing

Proud of being Europe's oldest capital, Sofia has a lot of sights to offer. If you take a tour around the center, you can see the history of the city revealing in front of you.

Traces of the first settlements on this territory date back some 7 000 years ago. Neolithic mounds unearthed in surrounding villages and within several of the city’s residential districts bear witness to Sofia’s ancient history. Finds dated back to the Stone and Copper Ages from Sofia surroundings are on display in the National Museum of Archeology and the National History Museum. Number of private and public buildings baths, villas and a temple honoring Zeus can be seen in the heart of the city. In the mere courtyard of today's Presidential Palace, St George Rotonda is still witnessing of the important role of Serdika (ancient name of Sofia) in early Christianity.

Back to the center of the city, the building of the National Museum of Archeology is an important reminder of the dark centuries under ottoman reign.

Just a few hundred meters from there, you can see the wonderful orthodox St Nedelya cathedral, the impressive Banya Bashi mosque, the new catholic St. Joseph Catholic cathedral and the Sofia Synagogue as proof of the multicultural traditions of the city and its inhabitants.
