The history of Bulgarian ballet

The history of ballet in Bulgaria dates back almost a century. Throughout the years, the artists dedicated to art of dance in Bulgaria have recorded achievements that only be compared to the greatest in dance. Today's Bulgarian ballet companies can boast of top-selling contemporary repertoire but also a respectful portfolio of nearly 30 classic titles, considered the most difficult both financially and creatively. Among them are "The Nutcracker", "Swan Lake", "Giselle", "Don Quixote", "Bayaderka", "Coppelia", "Sleeping Beauty", "Romeo and Juliet", "The Lady with the Camellias", "Sheherazade". "Zorba the Greek", "Carmen", "Rhapsody in Blue", "Sylphide", "Cinderella" and others.

Many dancers from the Bulgarian school today are in leading positions in the world's largest troupes. Constant collaborations with leading foreign choreographers and directors improves and enriches the repertoire and the dancers themselves. Names such as Yuri Grigorovich, his alumnus Sergei Bobrov, Diana White, Kipling Houston, Irene Schneider, Sonia Alonso, Pavel Stalinski, Catherine Pouzin, Catherine Benets, worked here very productively. This rich history created generations of world class Bulgarian teachers and choreographers who continue to develop the art of dance in our country.

In the past decades, the number of dance schools in Bulgaria has risen significantly. More and more talented children enter the repetition hall at youngest age to grow up as inspired and perfectly trained young dancers. The achievements of Bulgarian children and young people on stage are worldly recognized and always highly awarded.

Now, Sofia will welcome children and young dancers from around the world to share talent and passion for the art of dance in the biggest international dance competition yet to be organized in our capital.
